S: Specific
Big or Small? Determine what it is you are trying to
achieve—fame, fortune, more time with the family—
be specific and be detailed…you can’t expect to get
what you can’t define!
M: Measurable
How will you know when you’ve reached your goal?
Will you experience pride and personal satisfaction
when you have achieved your goals, or is your goal
monetary?
A: Attainable
Is this a Vision or a Dream? Is this something that
you can (or even want to) achieve in your lifetime? If
you don't achieve it, will you consider yourself a
failure or look at the opportunities it the experience
has created?
R: Reasonable
Is this goal reasonable? Does it make sense in your
life right now? Is this something that can fit into other
plans and goals you (and those close to you) have
already established?
T: Tangible
Is your goal a “state of being” or a “specific target”?
Consider the difference between "I will be financially
secure some time over the next few years" as
opposed to "by September, 2007, I will be making
$10,000 per month . . ."
T: Time-specific
What is the specific time frame in which you would
like to achieve your goal? “Next week…” as opposed
to “Someday…”
The "S.M.A.R.T.T." Way to Set
Goals
The victory of success is half won when
one gains the habit of setting goals and
achieving them. Even the most tedious
chore will become endurable as you
parade through each day convinced
that every task, no matter how menial or
boring, brings you closer to fulfilling
your dreams.
